We were extremely busy over the past few months, hosting and participating in several events throughout Guilford County.

Step Up – Stay Up

When: November 11, 2022
What: A hiring and resource event for individuals in East Greensboro
Where: True Salvation Christian Fellowship — Greensboro
Who: NCWorks’ Guilford Outreach Team

The NCWorks Outreach Team and True Salvation Christian Fellowship church hosted a hiring and resource event where job seekers could engage with local employers. The church, which offers a food pantry, provided space and resources for the event. The event featured 16 employers and over 30 attendees. Several participants were able to set up interviews and commented that they made great connections during the event.

NextGen Hiring Event

When: November 2, 2022
What: Hosted a hiring event with several employers
Where: Windsor Community Center—Greensboro
Who: NCWorks NextGen

NCWorks NextGen hosted the Nextgen Hiring Event at Windsor Center in Greensboro. Young adults interacted with employers to discuss potential job opportunities. Representatives from the multiple employers were in attendance.

GuilfordWorks’ Furniture Industry Roundtable

When: November 17, 2022
What: A roundtable discussion about the current challenges and opportunities in the local furniture industry and addressed solutions and strategic partnerships
Where: Cogden Yards—High Point
Who: GuilfordWorks Business Services team 

Joyce Rice, with the GuilfordWorks Business Engagement team, hosted a round table session of furniture industry representatives. Neil Harrington, Strategic Data Analyst at the NC Department of Commerce’s Labor and Economic Analysis Division (LEAD), presented data surrounding trends and insights into Guilford County. Sarah Stevenson and Montana Brown with the High Point Economic Development Corporation, Brian Norris with Business High Point-Chamber of Commerce, and Stephen Castelloe of GTCC were on hand to represent their respective organizations’ roles and aspirations to help the furniture industry thrive in High Point.

Gear Up | ASAP Roundtable

When: November 17, 2022
What: Held a round table discussion to address the value of apprenticeship opportunities in bridging the gap between an employer’s lack of talent and a job seeker’s potential career
Where: NCWorks Career Center—Greensboro
Who: GuilfordWorks Business Services team

Melissa Smith of the GuilfordWorks Business Engagement team hosted a round table session to present the value of apprenticeship opportunities to local employers and community leaders. Panelists included Employer and Pre-Apprenticeship Partners Kevin Robinson of RTriad, LLC, Pastor Randi Francis with Nehemiah Community Empowerment Center—along with two Gear Up apprentices, and Tiffany Jacobs and Wanda Ramos-Mcpherson of ApprenticeshipNC. There was lots of great information shared and engagement from participants. 2022 Youth Summit

When: November 19, 2022
What: Hosted a youth summit featuring several employers and resource providers, guest speaker: Solomon McCauley, the NCWorks Mobile Career Center, and the Be Pro, Be Proud Mobile Unit.
Where: Windsor Community Center—Greensboro
Who: GuilfordWorks and NCWorks NextGen

GuilfordWorks and NCWorks NextGen, along with Lincoln Financial Foundation, the Rotary Club of Greensboro and the Tate Williams Education and Leadership Foundation, hosted the 2022 Youth Summit at Windsor Community Center. After attending an inspirational speech from guest speaker Solomon McCauley, who presented “Get Ready for Your Next Steps,” participants met with employer representatives to learn about career opportunities and test their skills in the Be Pro Be Proud virtual reality mobile unit. Participants engaged with several participating employers and resource providers.

Fresh Start Job & Resource Fair

When: December 13, 2022
What: GuilfordWorks held a third hiring event for employees affected and the public in response to the layoffs at United Furniture Industries.
Where: NCWorks Career Center—High Point
Who: GuilfordWorks and NCWorks

In response to the layoffs and misinformation reported about United Furniture Industries (UFI), GuilfordWorks held the Fresh Start Job & Resource Fair for affected employees and the public. In August, GuilfordWorks held a Dislocation and Transition event for impacted UFI employees and hosted a separate hiring event with 14 participating employers and had over 70 job seekers in attendance.

The Fresh Start Job and Resource Fair was held at the NCWorks Career Center in High Point and featured 14 employers.
