INDUSTRY

Industry Overview

If you like helping people or if you enjoy research and experimentation, then a position in the healthcare field may be just what the doctor ordered. But you aren’t limited in this profession. The healthcare sector includes many industries, sub-industries, and a wide variety of companies. Any businesses involved in products and services related to health and medical care are represented in the healthcare sector and further categorized under six main industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, equipment, distribution, facilities, and managed healthcare. The fact is, there are more than 200 healthcare professions — other than doctors, nurses, and dentists.

The healthcare sector is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries. And, it’s one of the rapidly-expanding professions in the Triad. With an aging population, driving higher demand for healthcare services, occupations in the healthcare industry are projected to grow faster than any other profession in the nation. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 14 percent from 2018 to 2028.”

Healthcare Industry Careers

According to the North American Industry Classification System, “The Health Care and Social Assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistance because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance. The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. All industries in the sector share this commonality of process, namely, labor inputs of health practitioners or social workers with the requisite expertise. Many of the industries in the sector are defined based on the educational degree held by the practitioners included in the industry.”
