INDUSTRY

Industry Overview

Information technology (IT) uses computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data or information. The term commonly refers to computers and computer networks, but it also includes other information distribution technologies such as television and telephones. In fact, numerous products or services are associated with information technology, including computer hardware, software, electronics, semiconductors, internet, telecom equipment, and e-commerce. An information technology system (IT system) is an information system, a communications system, or a computer system – including all hardware, software and peripheral equipment – operated by a limited group of users.

Every business, organization, and governmental institution has some need for an information technology system to execute their day-to-day processes. Accordingly, either direct employees or outsourced contractors are needed to maintain and operate these systems — which bodes well for the information technology sector. As businesses continue to generate more data, and more emphasis is placed on the security of that data, the demand for information technology professionals means that jobs in this sector will continue to expand for many years.
