Gear Up

Gear Up | ASAP is a formal registered apprenticeship system administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. Through Gear Up, we work with local businesses to deliver an enthusiastic, experienced workforce who meets their specific needs. We provide an apprentice with structured on-the-job learning, related instruction and a progressive wage. Gear Up also provides an excellent opportunity for women, minorities, veterans, older youth, and justice-served job seekers.

In November 2021, the GuilfordWorks Adult Apprenticeship Program received a new brand moniker: Gear Up | ASAP (Adult Specialized Apprenticeship Program). With an updated branding and a new website, the program received a reinvigorated focus, simplified procedures, and straightforward terminology.

      History

Over the years, participants in our workforce program services expressed an interest in apprenticeships. So, the GuilfordWorks Business Services team worked with local businesses, education partners, and state agencies to develop an adult apprenticeship program. In March 2020, the GuilfordWorks Adult Apprenticeship Program became a registered apprenticeship program, making GuilfordWorks the first workforce board in the Piedmont recognized with this honor.

      Adult-Focused

Gear Up is an adult-focused apprenticeship initiative. These apprentices are career-minded, experienced adults seeking to advance their careers through mentorship and on-the-job training. This program prepares unemployed and underemployed adults and out-of-school young adults (age 18-24) who can benefit from this workforce participation level. Beforehand, this population had limited opportunities to access apprenticeship opportunities in a coordinated manner. That means a local business can access individuals who understand how to work and are eager for a chance to prove themselves.

How does the program help job seekers?

As part of the Gear Up program, apprentices are paired with experienced mentors and trained in all aspects of an occupation. Apprentices get paid while learning job-specific skills in an in-demand career and gaining real-world work experience. Apprentices are also able to earn state and nationally recognized industry-endorsed certifications. Most curricula can be completed in under two years, allowing apprentices to jump right into a career path and quickly reach a progressive wage.

Based on eligibility, pre-apprentices can receive supportive services through NCWorks to further prepare them for apprenticeship placement.

How can it benefit a business?

As a competency-based plan of action, GuilfordWorks Gear Up | ASAP is specialized to meet the needs of any business, allowing flexibility in the learning structure. The program helps employers develop a talent pipeline to serve the business long-term better. The program also lowers search and recruitment costs and reduces onboarding costs utilizing Gear Up grants.
