Young Leadership Training

Business Success Stories

The future of your business relies solely on the next generation of leadership, Not only does your business need reliable and effective management today, your business should be focused on raising up its future leaders.

In this piece, Cassondra Winner, HR and GHS Manager, and other Cascade Die Casting Group employees speak about the various training programs that the company established with the support of GuilfordWorks Training Grants. Together, they explain how the training has enabled the company to cultivate its next generation of managers and leaders and allowed each of them to grow professionally.

GuilfordWorks offers both on-the-job and small business training grants. On-the-job training (OJT) saves employers time and money while helping individuals gain employment. With Incumbent Worker Training, small businesses can develop their own courses to train staff in a way that meets their specific needs.

It’s a really big deal for us. It’s something that opens up managers, upper management. We have time now to handle problems we should be dealing with instead of the smaller issues that people on the floor are empowered to deal with themselves.

GuilfordWorks also has an Adult Apprenticeship Program that enables businesses to create a quality talent pipeline. Through this program, apprentices are paired with experienced mentors and trained in all aspects of the occupation. Currently, this program offers three industry tracks: welding, cybersecurity, and computer support specialist. As this program grows, GuilfordWorks plans to expand to create new industry tracks.

TRANSCRIPT:

Cassondra: I was looking for some training specifically for our up-and-coming leadership. So, we have numerous employees who are young and exciting and ready to do more, but we don’t have the skillset there for them to succeed.

The soft-skill side is really developing our younger managers and leadership team in order to deal with the problems that they’re going to face.

Randy: My role here at Cascade Die Casting is Manufacturing Engineer. That entails everything from die design to process control, CAD modeling, internal reviews of processes, machine fixtures, CNC the quoting of the parts as they come in and dealing with the customers on the issues that they may have.

My very first meeting. I got kudos right afterward. And, it was because I was able to sit down, get everybody in a room, go over bullet points, take ideas from each individual person without letting one person take over my meetings. So, it seemed like I was already years ahead of where I was, even though I was just a few months in at the time.

Cassondra: We have these young people who now have the skills to be able to handle conflict on their own. And how do you, you know, problem solve an issue, a quality issue on the floor, so upper management doesn’t have to do it for you.

Aleidi: After I received that class, I feel that I could solve some problems without the manager.

Ann: It has helped with the problem solving and being able to address issues directly in a well-mannered way.

Cassondra: It’s a really big deal for us. It’s something that opens up managers, upper management. We have time now to handle problems we should be dealing with instead of the smaller issues that people on the floor are empowered to deal with themselves.

I mean, I’m able to have a skilled workforce without having to do all the work myself. That was one of the things myself and my coordinator. We were doing almost all of the training. And then we were just hoping that the person would work out. Now we’re able to really sit down and have competency tests and understand whether someone is going to succeed within the first 90 days, which is kind of our crunch period.
