Honoring Women Veterans

Employee Recognition, Success Stories

March was Women’s History Month, and as part of that celebration, we want to recognize all outstanding women veterans. One such individual is part of our Greensboro NCWorks and Jobs for Veterans State Grants (JVSG) team: Shikea McCollum.

Shikea was born and raised in North Carolina and is now a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) in our Greensboro center. Along with her DVOP duties helping veterans find jobs, Shikea is also the state’s female Veterans Table Talk Coordinator. She’s passionate about assisting and advocating for all veterans but is particularly interested in advocating for female veterans.

Shikea McCollum: Basic Training

Her passion comes from her own experience as a female Soldier in the United States Army from 2000 to 2004. This life experience gave her the drive to get her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from UNC-Greensboro and NC A&T University and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of New England.

Shikea is currently working to be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker to have a therapeutic impact on female veterans who have experienced trauma in and outside of the military. Her background in social work and her passion for veterans makes her uniquely qualified to assist veterans with significant barriers to employment. Shikea is also a Board member of Combat Female Veterans Families United, a member of American Legion Post 540 and the Triad Vet Coalition.

To our women veterans and all of the women of DWS; Salute, Respect, and special recognition in honor of Women’s History Month!
